Part 2: Truck Safety Fundamentals

A: Overview of trucks models in U.S and safety features.

Before the invention of the combustion engine, overland freight transportation was by rail or horse-driven vehicles. The first truck was created at the end of the 19th century, but it wasn’t until World War I that people started using trucks extensively to transport cargo. Today, the trucking industry is a critical component of the US economy, moving almost three-quarters of American freight and employing millions of people.

In USA, there will be more than 3 types of trucks but here, we focus on only three types of the trucks

  1. Freightliner truck.
  2. International truck.
  3. Volvo truck.

1: Freightliner truck.

Freightliner Trucks is a US semi-truck manufacturer. Founded in 1929 as the truck-manufacturing division of Consolidated Freightways (from which it derives its name), the company was established in 1942 as Freightliner Corporation.  The company is headquartered in Portland, Oregon (the city of its founding); vehicles are currently manufactured in Cleveland and Mount Holly, North Carolina and Santiago Tianguistenco and Saltillo, Mexico.

2: International truck.

Navistar, Inc. is an American holding company created in 1986 as the successor to International Harvester. Navistar operates as the owner of International-branded trucks and diesel engines. On July 1, 2021, Navistar became a wholly owned subsidiary of Traton, and therefore part of the Volkswagen Group. Headquartered in Lisle, Illinois, the company has 13,000 employees worldwide as of 2019.

3: Volvo Truck

Volvo is a truck manufacturing division of Volvo based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Volvo Trucks was a separate company within Volvo. The Volvo Group was reorganized on 1 January 2012 and as a part of the process, Volvo Trucks ceased to be a separate company and was instead incorporated into Volvo Group Trucks along Volvo's other truck operations, as Renault Trucks and Mack Trucks. The first Volvo truck rolled off the production lines in 1928, and in 2016 Volvo Trucks employed more than 52,000 people around the world.

B: Truck’s Safety:

Dispatch company work on truck so the dispatch team have to keep on the truck for its safety and life. Therefore, to ensure optimal safety outcomes, the dispatch team must complete a thorough safety inspection of the truck on a standardized form prior to each trip. This procedure is essential to guarantee the vehicle is in good working condition and compliant with all relevant safety regulations, thereby minimizing the risk of accidents and ensuring a safe transportation process.

The below form is a sample for the truck inspection form.
